You may want to make your air conditioning system more energy-efficient, but the cost of installing an entirely new system can often be just too expensive. If this is the case, you should be looking at auxiliary installations that can work in conjunction with your current system, improving performance without the expense of a total replace project. Whole house fans are one of the best supplemental systems available. And if you live in the wonderful Nevada County area you have the benefit of warm days with cool nights.

How Whole House Fans Work:
A whole house fan works by quickly pulling in large amounts of fresh cool air from outside and circulating it through the house. Meanwhile, the hot air gets pushed out the attic in minutes. If the temperature outside drops from 85-degrees to 75-degrees in two hours, for example, the air in the house will take about four hours to drop that much.

Whole house fans can do the job in less than half that time. Since it pushes air out the attic, it also cools the attic and reduces heat gain in the house. So by turning on your fan in the cool morning hours, you can bring in comfortable air, then close up the house and avoid the searing heat of summer. Turning it on again in the evening ensures all day comfort on all but the very hottest days.

Advantages of Whole House Fans

In Nevada and Placer County, whole house fans can eliminate the need for central air conditioning altogether. This can allow you to focus on installing a more efficient heating system for your home. Even if you need something more than whole house fans during the summer, the fans will greatly reduce the cost of running your current air conditioning systems.

Okay, so I’ve had a little too much time in front of the computer lately. Here's a cool project anyone can do using plane old duct tape. It’s a duct tape neck tie. Here’s how. Continue reading →

Okay, I know this has nothing to do with plumbing, or electric but, it does have something to do with heating and air conditioning at least we use it in HVAC. It’s a cool project anyone can do using plane old duct tape. It’s a duct tape neck tie. Here’s how.

Supplies and Tools

Duct tape

Scissors

Utility knife and cutting board

Pen

Tie to trace

Skill Level

Beginner

Approximate Crafting Time

30 minutes to 1 hour

Step 1

Make two sheets of duct tape fabric that are 32 inches long and two inches wide each. To make a fabric, lay a strip of duct tape sticky side up on a flat surface. Lay the next strip parallel to the first, slightly overlapping the edge. Continue until you have four strips wide. Then, place additional strips sticky side down over the existing sheet to finish your fabric.

Step 2

Take an old tie and trace the outline of the wider part of the tie onto the one of the sheets of duct tape fabric. You will then need to trace the skinny part of the tie onto your other sheet of duct tape fabric.

Step 3

Cut out both parts of the tie.

Step 4

Tape the ends of the tie together using the same color duct tape as the tie itself

Step 5

You can get creative and decorate your tie with stripes. Start by laying out a few strips of duct tape that are each about six inches long. These should be a different color than your tie. Using your utility knife cut lengthwise into strips that are various widths. Lay these strips across your tie and then trim off the excess. Only decorate 1/3 of the way up your tie so that when you tie it, the decoration doesn’t get peeled off.

That’s it. Now you can impress all your friends and co-workers with your creativity. Nice….

Fact: For every degree you set your thermostat back over an eight hour period, you’ll save about 1 percent on your heating bill each year. Sure, you can try to remember to turn it down manually 10 degrees when you leave the house or go to sleep. But who can remember?

Install a programmable thermostat and you wont have to remember and when you wake up your home will be nice and warm.
