Protecting Your Pipes and Drought Resistant Ground Cover

drought resistant ground coverOn this week’s episode of You Got This!, Rosalie flies solo and discusses things you can do to prevent and then treat, frozen pipes. While that topic is often covered, with winter rearing its head throughout this Spring, it seemed topical.  Speaking of pipes, do you have a home with exterior pipes showing? We also discuss budget-friendly and easy D-I-Y solutions for hiding those exposed pipes on your home or in your yard.

Use Plants
One of the most popular ways to disguise exposed exterior pipes is to use plants. You can use evergreen ground cover for low-lying horizontal or short vertical pipes. This ground cover only grows a few inches tall.

Use the feathered pink dianthus plants or the stone orpine. Another option is decorative grass. Plant these on each side of the pipe. Just make sure you don’t block any access ports with the plant’s base.

Use a Wooden Box
A wooden box is a great option for pipes grouped together. You can choose either a horizontal or vertical box, based on your needs. You can build the box yourself and paint it any color you choose. It’s one of the most affordable ways to hide your pipes.

Use Decorative Objects
Do you use birdbaths, fountains and other hardscape features to decorate your lawn? If so, use one of these to hide your exterior pipes. Some of the most common decorative objects include columns holding gazing balls, planters with a beautiful shrub or flowers, and trellises.

Big shout out to Eyman Plumbing Heating & Air, for their excellent blog post on the topic of hiding exterior pipes.

Speaking of plants and the outdoors, we also covered some of the more drought-resistant ground cover that are known to thrive in the sun. Even though we have fewer sunny days in February, in the summer we’ll want plants that can withstand the sun and require limited watering.

Just a few of those plants include:

  • Lantana
  • Silver Carpet
  • Spanish Daisy
  • Gazania
  • Creeping Rosemary
  • Ice Plant
