Homes built in the 1960s and 1970s often had main electrical panels installed that were manufactured by Zinsco and then marketed under the brand “Sylvania.” These main and sub panels are extremely dangerous and are know fire hazards. They have a history of breakers failing and panel meltdowns. In fact, you may even find your home uninsurable if you have a Zinsco/Sylvania electrical panel in your home.
This week, on You Got This!, we discuss the history and hazards of these electrical panels. What’s truly scary is that these things have a fail rate of about 25%. The manufacturer used highly corrosive metals in their construction. We also dive into the dangers of the push in/backstab electrical terminals that many homes have. This type of wiring allows for connections that are not secure and can easily lead to connection failure. The loose connections are serious fire hazards.
