As summer arrives, and the dreaded wildfire season, we’re sure to be faced with more Planned Power Outages. On this week’s episode, we discuss what you can do to alleviate the discomfort and prepare for these inconveniences.
One of the things to prepare for now is to make sure you have propane in that outdoor grill. You can still feed the family, and even boil water for that ever important cup of java, using your outdoor grill.
Also important is water storage, as many homes in more rural areas may be on a well. When that power goes out you have a handful of flushes before you stop getting water to the residence. Stock up with containers of water so that you can still have access to water for cooking, washing, and drinking.
In prior episodes we discussed clearing your property to mitigate the risk of burning embers. Unfortunately when you’re in the Sierra Nevadas during a heat wave, and you’re without power, the first thing you may think of is the food in the refrigerator and freezer. The most obvious tip is not to open the doors during the power outage, and if you’re someone who requires medicines to be refrigerated, make sure to prepare a cooler with blocks of ice to extend the efficacy of your cold medications.
